Recently, as I was frolicking amongst the perfectly curated and dimly lit shelves of my favourite local natural skincare and wellness dealer, I came across something rather peculiar. 

Presenting conspicuously as an Victorian-style dentistry tool (and not overly dissimilar to a medieval torture device) – this thin copper curl of metal piqued my interest immediately, and I waved over the store owner to pour me a warm cup of demystification.

“That’s a tongue scraper,” they said. “It will change your life.”

Six minutes later, I was the owner of one; schlepping happily towards an enlightened world of oral hygiene steeped in ancient Ayurvedic practices. But before I was able to fully lean into this new lifestyle, I wanted to learn a little more about it.

Professional Tongue Scraper

I had been promised a life changing experience.  So, what exactly were the benefits? I turned to Google, and, as a precautionary tale – I recommend avoiding peeking at the images if you fancy holding on to your breakfast.

The main takeaway from my hour or two of searching reinforced that I could anticipate enjoying VIP access to a drastically improved sense of taste, as a tongue scraper was proven to have reduced the amount of tongue coating. 

And I wouldn't be waiting for too long to see this ritual come into effect; my capacity for an elevated taste sensation would appear after only two weeks of dedicated tongue scraping. 

This means my tongue may be able to better distinguish between bitter, sweet, salty, and sour sensations and therefore extend the ‘range’ of my palate. Fancy.

Further, because removing bacteria is key to preventing cavities, gum disease, and other conditions affecting the mouth, the tongue scraper can help inform a significant part of your overall mouth-health routine. 

It has been suggested that twice daily use has the potential to limit the buildup of bacteria and excess debris that causes the tongue to take on a white, coated appearance, while decreasing your chances of experiencing bad breath and dental decay. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the health of the tongue is an indication of your entire body’s holistic state of health, and is able to reveal organ inflammation, heart head and muscular pain.

By this stage of my reading, I was utterly convinced to give this a 2-week trial run and decided to ceremoniously open the paper packaging to reveal the steel instrument that caused this whole discovery. It was time to scrape.

Following instructions on the packaging, I began by brushing and flossing my teeth and then opening my mouth as wide as I could to place the scraper at the very back of my tongue. My gag reflex kicked in and I thought I was going to throw up, so for the next attempt I ensured the scraper wasn’t jamming so hard into the back of my mouth. 

Once safely positioned, I applied gentle pressure while slowly pulling the tool across my tongue. The instructions told me this shouldn’t be a painful experience, and it wasn’t. 

What came off my tongue simply isn’t fit for journalistic detail – so I urge you to try this ritual for yourself and DM me if you need emotional support.

In short, a LOT of stuff comes off your tongue and it’s rather unpleasant. However, what would be much more unpleasant would be to let it remain there – don’t you think?

Ingredients, techniques (“slugging,” anyone?) and devices promising to completely transform the health of your skin.

There are a few that spring to mind when I think of more recent beauty buzzwords. Skinimalism, the skin barrier and the microbiome are all buzzy beauty terms that took over my inbox (and, in turn, the content I was producing) throughout the two-ish years we spent indoors (or as I have taken to calling it, “The Great Quiet”). 

The difference between these terms and the buzzwords of the past, however, is that these don’t seem to be leaving us anytime soon, perhaps moving them beyond a fast trend and instead sending them into the realm of widely accepted beauty habits. 

Another thing I find interesting about these particular terms is that there is one ingredient that, in my mind, links them all together - ceramides. 

Ceramides were first brought to my attention in early 2019 when a dermatologist I was interviewing suggested that I work them into my skincare routine. 

Until that moment, I had never heard of them. A few months passed without me paying these mythical “ceramides” much attention (they weren’t trending yet! They were hard to find!) and then… bang. 

By late 2019, thanks largely to the “minimalism” trend and the push towards simple, pharmacy-available skincare formulas that came with it, ceramides were everywhere. From window displays to social campaigns, I couldn’t turn my head without seeing a new ceramide-spiked product emerge. 

We know they have some link to the skin barrier, and they’re often lumped in with hyaluronic acid when we hear of their top level benefits, but what are ceramides, what can ceramides do for the skin, and are they more than just another beauty buzzword?

Often referred to as the building blocks or cement of healthy skin, ceramides are found within the stratum corneum of the skin, which is the outermost layer of the epidermis. 

Ceramides themselves are a chain of lipid molecules that comprise around 50% of the skin barrier. 

As you know (and if you don’t, no judgement! Find out more about the skin barrier in this article), the skin barrier (or lipid barrier) is what protects the skin from environmental stressors and aggressors like pollution, free radical damage and bacteria, and allows the skin to really lock in moisture. 

Ceramides are naturally found in the skin, but we begin to produce less and less from the age of 30 and, given that they’re our skin’s first line of defence against the environment, it’s important to supplement them in our topical skincare. 

What can ceramides actually do for the skin? 

A healthy skin barrier is what really allows the skin to function at its healthiest, so ceramides are essential (a word I don’t use lightly in beauty) when it comes to the overall health of the skin. 

In a preventative sense, working ceramides into your skincare routine to strengthen the skin’s barrier function can help you slow down the visible signs of skin ageing, as many of these are the result of free radical damage and pollutants. 

Ceramides also allow your skin to better retain moisture, which is why they’re so beneficial as part of a winter skincare routine. They’re incredibly soothing, so a wonderful ingredient for those with sensitised or easily irritated skin, as irritation is often a sign of a compromised skin barrier. 

On more of a surface level (this pun was not intentional, but I’ll admit that I am thrilled by it), working ceramides into your routine can give the skin a more youthful, plump appearance and a beautiful glow, thanks again to their ability to help the skin hold onto water. 

Personally, the biggest change I’ve seen in my own skin since working ceramides into my routine has been in inflammation - keeping in mind there are many, many skin ailments that fall under the inflammation umbrella. 

Perhaps the most obvious is redness, which is something I am slightly prone to in the winter months. I have learned that this redness in the winter is a sign of a compromised skin barrier, due almost entirely to the lack of humidity in the air, and adding ceramides into my routine has completely eradicated this. 

The most surprising benefit, for me, has been the effect ceramides have had on breakouts - which also fall within the inflammation category. 

I am fortunate in that my skin isn’t particularly acne prone, however when I do experience a pimple, it’s often quite dry. 

My instinct for many years had been to dry any breakouts out further, attacking them with acids in an attempt to unblock the pore. Over the last few years I have changed my approach, instead upping my ceramide applications to almost give back to the skin. 

I’ve found this has allowed my spots to heal in half the time they once were, with ceramides working to soothe them and clear the inflammation at the source.

How to work ceramides into your skincare routine

My most frequently asked question around ceramides has been “At what point do I fit ceramides into my skincare routine?” The answer is a fun one - ceramides can be added into your routine at any step! 

The real beauty (again, an unintentional yet pleasing pun) of ceramides is that they play well with every other ingredient and, in my experience, they don’t really play a significant part in a product’s texture, which means you can use ceramides at any step in your routine. 

Unlike many active skincare ingredients, there’s also no such thing as “too much” when it comes to ceramides. This in mind, I’ll often use a ceramide-rich cleanser, a serum with ceramides in it, and a moisturiser packed with ceramides all at once. 

Similarly, there’s really no skin type that can’t benefit from the topical application of ceramides. 

Dry skin types will benefit from its ability to improve the skin’s ability to lock in moisture, oily skin types will appreciate its ability to reduce inflammation and protect the skin from bacteria and pollution, mature skins will find their exposure to free radical damage is reduced, and sensitive skins will find ceramide-rich skincare can help to soothe existing and reduce future irritations. 

My opinion? Ceramides are so much more than a beauty buzzword- they’re the building blocks of healthy skin.

But, based on what I’ve gleaned from just about every dermatologist I have ever interviewed, blurted questions at during a consult or walked past on the street, there are really only two products one “needs” to have on high rotation for beautiful, young looking skin- sunscreen and retinol. 

We’ve all heard about this power couple. We know that sunscreen, as its name suggests, works to protect our skin from the sun - but what about retinol? 

Widely lauded as the topical secret to youthful, blemish free, smoothed and lifted, bright and bouncy skin, there’s still a great deal of mystery (and misinformation) surrounding this tried-and-tested skin salve.

WHAT IS RETINOL AND WHAT CAN IT ACTUALLY DO FOR THE SKIN

Retinol is an over-the-counter derivative of Vitamin A, also known as Vitamin A1. For retinol to “work” on the skin, it must go through a conversion process from retinol to retinoic acid, which is the form of retinol that is bioavailable to the skin. 

This is a natural conversion process performed by the enzymes found in our own skin.

We’re told that the topical use of retinol can reduce the visible signs of ageing, can fill out fine lines and wrinkles, fade age spots, treat acne and improve the overall texture of the skin- but what can it actually do? 

The beauty of retinol is that it can, and has been proven to, achieve all of that at once. 

Retinol works by increasing the speed of the skin’s natural cell turnover process. 

Our skin naturally “sheds” dead and dry skins on a 28 day turnover process naturally. Retinol has the ability to enhance that natural turnover process, speeding up the cycle. 

So how does that manage to assist with both ageing and acne? In a few ways. 

Acne is the result of clogged pores, and increased cell turnover means we’re shedding any cells that may be clogging the pores quicker than we otherwise would. 

Retinol also decreases the function of overactive oil glands, balancing the skin’s natural oil production for skin that looks clearer and pores that appear smaller and tighter. 

That enhances cell turnover also boosts the skin’s natural production of collagen, which is how (and why!) retinol can give the skin a fuller, firmer, bouncier appearance. 

Retinol also slows the production of the enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin in the skin, working to smooth the skin’s surface and “fill out” fine lines and wrinkles. 

Retinol, despite being an antioxidant, also has an almost “exfoliant” quality on the skin (as it thins the outermost layer of the skin while thickening the inner layers), leaving it appearing brighter and more even in tone, with dark spots and pigmentation appearing faded with consistent use. 

Between retinol, retinoids, retin-A, retinol esters and the rest of the retin roster, it can be difficult to decipher what we’re actually applying to the skin, let alone what we should be applying. 

Where retinol is an over-the-counter form of Vitamin-A, the word “retinoids” is the umbrella beneath which retinol sits. 

Retinoids include everything within the retin family, including retinol, retinol esters, retinaldehyde, retinoic acid, tretinoin and isotretinoin. 

Tretinoin and isotretinoin, two ingredients you’ll have likely heard used by dermatologists and dermal clinicians, are pure forms of retinoic acid, meaning they’re the strongest of the retinoids. 

For this reason, they are prescription only medication, as opposed to retinol which is available over the counter. 

The closer a retinoid is to pure retinoic acid, the more effective it is on the skin but the more sensitising it can also be- which is why working retinoids into your routine takes a little bit of work…

HOW TO WORK RETINOL INTO YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

There are a number of “rules of thumb,” so to speak, that will make working retinol into your skincare routine that bit more seamless. 

The first is your age. There is no true rule as to what age you can begin using retinol at, however most dermatologists agree that in your 20s is a great time to start in order to treat acne and prevent the depletion of collagen and elastin that comes naturally with age. 

The exception is teenagers with particularly acne-prone skin, although in those instances a dermatologist will likely prescribe a concentration of tretinoin rather than an over-the-counter retinol solution. 

When it comes to choosing a physical product with retinol in it to work into your routine, your options will likely come down to a serum or a moisturiser. If you are brand new to retinol, I would recommend using a moisturiser with retinol in it (noting, however, that I am an educated consumer and not an expert). 

I make this recommendation as, in my experience, moisturisers with retinol in them also usually contain really hydrating, soothing ingredients (think hyaluronic acid and ceramides) that work to counteract the potentially drying or irritating effects of retinol (a result of the ingredient slightly “thinning” the epidermis). A gentle, low-percentage (around 0.2%) retinol serum is also a great option for those new to the ingredient. 

Beyond dryness and irritation, “purging” is a common side effect of first-time retinol use - this sees the skin have a temporary break out, with deep rooted blemishes rising to the surface of the skin as the cell turnover process initially speeds up. 

To combat all of these side effects, I’ve found “buffering” my retinol to be the most effective solution for my skin (and is something I recommend all first-time retinol users try for themselves). 

Buffering your product involves applying a simple, hydrating moisturiser to your skin to create something of a barrier, letting it sink in for around 20 minutes, and then applying your retinol product afterwards. This will slightly lessen the concentration of the retinol, which will allow your skin time to adjust to the ingredient. 

How often you use retinol depends largely on the product itself and on your skin’s tolerance. If you are new to retinol, try using it 2 to 3 times per week, slowly building up over the course of around 8 weeks- slowly but surely! 

For some, a high percentage retinol used only a couple of times per week is better for the skin than using a lower percentage daily, and vice versa, so a commitment to a little trial-and-error is essential here. 

Retinol is generally recommended for nighttime use, as it makes the skin more sensitive to the sun. This is also why it’s essential (genuinely essential) to use SPF50+ daily when using retinol.

Why a healthy mouth means so much more than just white teeth and fresh breath.

As the owner of a slightly bewildered endocrine system (read: raging autoimmune disorder), it is in my best interests to avoid disruptive, and potentially toxic ingredients wherever possible. 

I tend to take a somewhat selective approach to this lifestyle - playing roulette when it suits me. Either I’m completely militant when it comes to certain ingredients, formulas or foods; or I plead ignorance. 

I can’t resist a Chilli Marg, or cheeky choccie bar, while my poor, overloaded liver looks on in terror. Balance is the entire basis of my ill-advised argument. 

As a wild combination of Pisces and INFP (the ‘mediator’), I’m a sensitive soul inside and out. A rashy gal if you will, whether it be from stress or a new washing powder. 

So it goes without saying, I’m fully in the militant camp on the ingredients list when it comes to beauty and wellness. A mere whiff of artificial fragrance and my eczema flares, or Sodium Laurel Sulfate and Mt Vesuvius makes an unwelcome home on my face. 

'Clean' beauty is taking over my shelf - hunting out the most gentle formulas for everything from cleansers to exfoliants. I’m dodging toxins on the daily. So it was only a matter of time before I’d investigate my toothpaste. 

I’m ashamed to admit it wasn’t the health benefits, but the visual appearance of the tube that first drew me into the world of natural oral care - like a moth to a flame when it comes to good branding. 

Perhaps that is intentional when it comes to oral health? While newer skincare brands equally prioritise visual identity with formulaic performance, toothpaste has long been lagging behind, sticking to a traditionally jarring colour palette of red, blue and white.

Selahatin avoids potentially toxic ingredients found in most toothpastes (horrifyingly also found in some toilet cleaner and paints), such as Triclosan, a pesticide that has been banned in soap and body wash by the FDA in the US. Known for its antibacterial properties, Triclosan wipes out all bacteria - and you guessed it, leads to an unbalanced microbiome. 

Having tried to avoid SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate) for the better part of a year, I was shocked to discover it in my humble toothpaste. Used to wash away debris, and give you that fresh foamy feeling when you brush, SLS can lead to irritation and organ toxicity, and is used as an insecticide. The list goes on.

Natural toothpaste and oral care products can help to avoid these harmful ingredients while still leaving your mouth feeling fresh (although with a little less froth). Look for a brand which adds nourishing ingredients to help restore your microbiome, including oral probiotics.

Avoiding refined sugars, staying hydrated and reviewing your mouth wash (watch out for chlorhexidine in particular) can all work in conjunction to improve your oral health. I’ve dabbled on and off with tongue scraping - brilliant for cleansing your mouth, but a habit I regularly forget about.

What You Need to Know About the Oral Microbiome

When it comes to nutrition and 'wellness', we are inundated with trends, buzz words, and voices dishing up conflicting advice.

Just when we think we’re in the know with the latest health advice, a whole other theory comes crashing into the picture, and more often than not it leaves one feeling overwhelmed and more confused than ever.

As a nutritionist, it's my job to help educate clients on how to be discerning with the information they are hearing: what to take on and what to ignore. Below are three of my favourite myths to debunk.  

Food in its most natural state is best, always. 

This can be applied to fruits and vegetables (fresh over dried), meat (a steak over jerky), nuts and seeds (raw over roasted) and the list goes on. 

When contemplating low-fat foods, the main category that comes to mind is dairy. We have full fat milk, cheese, butter etc and then we have skim, reduced fat, low-fat versions of them all. 

The problem with these low-fat products is that a lot of the goodness the full-fat variety delivers is lost when the fat is extracted in order to make the product low-fat. 

It undergoes a chemical process to have the fat removed and because the fat provides the flavour, a ton of artificial flavours, sweeteners or sugar is then added to ensure the food remains palatable. 

While this may mean the food now contains less calories, it also contains less nutrients - therefore less benefits. 

The now processed food has the capacity to disrupt hormones, our digestion and the ability to feel satiated that we get from eating unprocessed foods. The solution? Consume full fat where you can, and rest assured the body is built to synergise with foods that derive directly from the source (shout out to Mama Nature).

 Your body's ability to know when you have eaten enough is much easier to access when consuming the whole food, plus you are receiving the plethora of benefits the good fats provide.

Not all calories are created equal. The best way to recognise this is to imagine the caloric value of an avocado versus that of a Mars Bar. 

Now consider the nutritional value of each food. Without going too far into the nitty gritty of it all, the avocado delivers an abundance of good, healthy fats, large amounts of fibre as well as naturally occurring vitamin C, magnesium and a whole host of essential vitamins and minerals. Eating the Mars Bar, you can expect a spike in blood sugar levels that will later lead to a blood sugar level crash that will negatively impact energy, cognitive function, mood and the list goes on. 

Now, I’m certainly not here to tell you to never eat a chocolate bar again - but the point of this specific myth bust is to equip you with knowledge to make better decisions about your dietary staples. 

Knowing that the avocado may have more calories but simultaneously will be providing you with a ton of nutrition is a way for you to make choices that will benefit your overall health status with more clarity. 

There is such a thing as too much exercise, too much intensity and, in turn, too much stress on the body. 

When we exercise, we not only burn energy, we also purposefully place a certain amount of intensity on the physical body.

This is absolutely necessary - the problem occurs when we are in these intense situations for prolonged periods our nervous system takes a beating and, over time, our bodies begin to suffer. 

We have two main autonomic arms of our nervous system: 

+ The Sympathetic Nervous System: The state of fight or flight 

+ The Parasympathetic Nervous System: The state of rest and digest
