This handful of awe-soaked mushroom memories is always tinged with an essence of danger, peculiarity… something otherworldly. This is why it makes sense that our post-pandemic selves can’t get enough of them.

Market estimates place the value of the worldwide functional mushroom market at around $23 billion, and with the current mushroom boom, this number is expected to continue rising. 

Scientific studies have shown that medicinal mushrooms can be used to improve a wide range of health conditions, including those related to stress and anxiety, immunity, gut health, energy, athletic performance, focus, libido, skin health, and sleep, leading some to predict that they will soon replace CBD as the go-to supplement.

BUT WHAT EXACTLY ARE 'MEDICINAL' MUSHROOMS?

Well, technically, they are macroscopic fungi utilised in the form of extracts or powder for the prevention, relief, or healing of many diseases. 

Today, researchers are looking at medicinal mushrooms as a potential source of chemicals with immune cell response-modulating properties. 

As a result, they might help boost the immune system's biological response when administered in this way.

And what makes a mushroom ‘medicinal’ and a mushroom ‘magic’?

Psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, is a psychoactive substance that affects the brain and central nervous system. After ingesting the mushrooms, the user will "trip" within 30 minutes. The most prevalent side effects include hallucinations and impaired perception. 

The Australian government recently approved the use of these psychedelics for treating severe mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder, which do not always respond to traditional therapy or medicines. 

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) issued its decision on February 3 this year to allow the use of MDMA for PTSD that has not responded to treatment and psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression beginning in July 2023. Both are lawfully prohibited otherwise.

Ashwagandha is a popular herb in Ayurvedic medicine and has been used for centuries in India, the Middle East, and some regions of Africa.

It's commonly referred to as "Indian ginseng." Studies of these ‘magical mushrooms’ effects on cortisol levels and nervous system function have attested efficacy in reducing stress and anxiety.

​​The reishi mushroom, or Ganoderma lucidum, is a fungus that thrives in the warm, moist climates of several Asian countries. Fresh mushrooms are one option, but dried or powdered forms and extracts containing the relevant compounds are often used to treat anxiety symptoms and promote restful sleep.

Skincare enthusiasts have long touted the wonders of peptides, but only recently has the discussion entered the mainstream. 

They first popped on the scene in the ‘70s and then again in the early ‘00s with that infamous Olay collection (if you remember them, this article is definitely for you).

As more research is uncovering how peptides work and what they can do for our skin, we’re seeing an increase in peptide-based products (we're looking at you, Hailey Bieber).

They're sometimes referred to as the magic ingredient or the fountain of youth, with claims like ‘anti-ageing’, ‘acne healing’ and ‘skin tightening’. And believe it or not, the rumours are based in fact.

So what are peptides? How do peptides work? And when can you expect to see results? Let’s dive in, shall we?

Think of peptides as pocket-sized protein chains made up of 2 to 50 amino acids. They’re essentially the building blocks of our bodies – organs, muscles, skin and all. 

While they have the same structure as proteins, they’re smaller and easier for our skin and organs to digest, making them easier for our body to absorb.

But it doesn’t stop there. Peptides are proving to be instrumental in protecting our skin´s barrier restoring elasticity and producing a smooth, even complexion.

Peptides work by sending signals to your cells to perform certain tasks. These tasks will depend on what type of peptides they are (there are around 7,000!) and how they function.

Think of them as a coordinator or traffic manager. They control who does what, when. 

Let’s take peptides that boost collagen for example. They’ll tell a fleet of cells to start firing up your collagen production, while signalling growth-inhibiting peptides to sign off for duty.

You’ve recently picked up a brand new skincare product containing these wondrous peptides, when can you expect to see results?

Peptides work with consistent use. You can expect to see some changes around the two week mark.

Your breakouts may start clearing up, your cheeks may appear plumper, your skin will feel tighter and more hydrated. And those pesky sun spots? They’ll be on the way out.

Let’s first unpack what an active ingredient is. 

If you haven’t come across this term yet, it simply means that the ingredients within the skincare product actually do what they claim to do on the packaging.

In short, yes, peptides are considered an active ingredient when the right quantity and quality is used in the skincare product.

Yes, peptides work by absorbing into your skin. And because they’re so small, they’re easier for the body to break down, making them absorb at a faster rate than whole proteins.

One of the biggest claims attached to peptides is their ability to tighten skin.

Serums and moisturisers often contain peptides because of their rejuvenating power and collagen-boosting properties.

Our bodies create collagen naturally. Collagen is responsible for keeping our skin firm and elastic. As we age, our natural ability to produce collagen reduces, making our skin appear wrinkled, aged and tired.

Peptides ramp up your skin’s collagen production and with consistent use, your pores shrink, allowing you to achieve that tight, firm, hydrated effect.

They also help your skin heal (by reducing inflammation) and protects against sun damage (by blocking UV-related hyperpigmentation and reducing the risk of skin cancer in the process).

It’s best to trial out the two together and see whether it works for you. After all, products react differently to each skin type and complexion.

After the debate we’ve seen with Vitamin C, you’ll be surprised to find that peptides and retinol is less controversial.

While retinol can be effective on your skin, it doesn’t come without risk. Using retinol may cause dryness and irritation. 

Using a hydrating, healing active ingredient like peptides can help soothe the side effects of retinol and restore your skin’s barrier.

Of course, it’s important to remember that both of these products are potent. If you have sensitive skin, trial out how these two active ingredients interact on your skin before committing to a layered skincare routine.

And if you feel like your dryness or skin irritation isn’t improving, seek advice from a skincare specialist who can advise you on the best way forward.

How do Peptides Work?

Serums are, in essence, the heavy lifters of your skincare routine. 

Once you have the basics of your skincare routine mastered, your serums will allow you to truly tailor your skincare to your own needs, concerns and overall skin goals.

Learning to listen to and understand your skin is what makes serums such an important skincare step. When you take a moment each morning and evening to really look at your skin and notice how it’s feeling, you’ll learn to reach for specific serums to cater to those needs.

Building a simple, effective serum wardrobe will give you the ability to adapt your basic skincare routine to your skin. Here’s how to ensure your serums are really working for you.

Nothing, other than SPF is truly a “must” when it comes to skincare- however, if you are using skincare with hope of seeing visible change and addressing specific skin concerns (as opposed to using skincare for very basic skin health maintenance, in which case a great cleanser and moisturiser may just do the trick), serums are the step that will take you there.

Why should you seriously consider working a serum into your skincare routine? Serums deliver a concentrated dose of active ingredients to the skin and, depending on which actives and hero ingredients your chosen serum contains, they can target even the most specific of skin concerns.

While it’s true that your cleanser and moisturiser can address those concerns too, the concentration of actives in those products is significantly lower and therefore the results may be less noticeable and will take longer to physically see.

One of the benefits of building up a serum wardrobe of sorts is that it allows you to keep your moisturiser nice and simple. If you’re using your serum step to address specific skin concerns, then your moisturiser only really needs to do what it’s designed to do: moisturise!

Your Guide To Actives: Which Serum is For You?

If you are new to serums and are looking to learn more about what your skin does and doesn’t like, we recommend beginning with a serum with a single active or hero ingredient. There are many incredible serums available with multiple benefits that combine several active ingredients, however while you are still learning to listen to and read your skin, choosing a single ingredient serum will allow you to isolate any changes you see in your skin. 

Not sure where to begin? Here are some of the most common active ingredients found in serums and what they can potentially do for your skin.

Vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide, is a bit of a skincare all-rounder. It generally doesn’t cause any sensitivity or irritation in more sensitive skin types, it addresses multiple skin concerns, it plays well with other ingredients and it can be applied both morning and night. 

The most widely documented benefits of niacinamide are its ability to hydrate the skin, even out the overall tone of the skin and reduce the appearance of pores. However more recent research has shown that niacinamide is also an effective ingredient for acne-prone skin. 

Consider B your “booster,” working to increase and boost the abilities of the rest of your skincare.

Panthenol, the stable form of vitamin B5, is celebrated for its ability to heal irritated skin and increase the skin’s ability to hold onto moisture. Vitamin B5 is loved by those with sensitive skin, rosacea, or anyone who is dealing with sensitised skin as a result of acidic skincare, laser treatments or peels given its ability to calm and soothe irritations and reduce redness.


A great B5 serum is always worth having on hand in case the skin requires intense soothing and healing, and fast. Medik8’s Intense option is wonderful for those with skin that is particularly prone to irritation, while the original formula is a great all-rounder.

Retinol is another skincare all-rounder, however it is a particularly potent ingredient so it’s important to add it into your routine slowly to avoid over-sensitising the skin, drying it out or causing excessive purging (more on that shortly). 

Retinol is touted as an anti-ageing powerhouse due its ability to increase cell turnover, therefore evening out the skin tone, plumping up fine lines and firming the skin, boosting collagen production and smoothing the surface of the skin.  Retinol has also been shown to reduce the appearance of acne.

Ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C, is known for its brightening properties. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which makes it great for protecting the skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors, however its most noticeable benefit comes in the form of its skin-brightening, complexion-evening, pigmentation fading properties. 

If you suffer from sun damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or are just longing for a brighter complexion, a vitamin C serum may be the right choice for you.

Hyaluronic acid, available in multiple molecular weights, is the hydrator of the serum spectrum. Hyaluronic acid boasts the ability to hold up to 1000 times its own weight in moisture and, when applied topically, can increase the skin’s ability to lock in hydration too. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acids work to penetrate the skin, while high molecular weights work on the skin barrier.

If you have multiple skin concerns that you wish to address, you have a couple of options. 

The first is to choose a serum with multiple active ingredients. A multi-benefit serum takes the majority of the guesswork out of the application process. On that note, your other option is to pick and choose your serums depending on your skin’s needs each day, layering them or using them at different times of day to address multiple concerns at once. 

The benefit of the latter option is that you can really, deeply tailor your routine to suit your skin’s needs, as our skin often wants different things from day to day!

This approach, however, requires a little bit of practise, as there are a few serum rules of thumb that should be adhered to in order to see lasting results and to ensure you don’t sensitise the skin. To simplify things, here are a few serum guidelines we recommend following.

Most skincare professionals recommend avoiding topical vitamin A while pregnant, as there is simply not enough evidence surrounding its safety for pregnant women- which is, of course, an area that should not be left to chance! As per anything related to pregnancy, it is worth speaking to a medical professional if you have any questions surrounding the suitability of your skincare products throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Given how powerful an active vitamin A is, it’s worth starting small. Where a hyaluronic acid serum, for example, can be applied morning and evening without hesitation, it’s a good idea to begin using your retinol serum once or twice a week at first to allow your skin time to adjust - gradually working up to every second evening and, if you wish, nightly use. 

Purging (acne lingering beneath the skin’s surface becoming visible) and dry, flakey skin are both common side effects when strong retinol is first worked into a routine, but “buffering” is a technique that you can use to help your skin build up a tolerance.  Buffering involves applying a basic moisturiser around 20 minutes before applying your retinol, creating a slight barrier between your skin and the actives. 

If you are also using an exfoliant, be it physical or chemical, it’s recommended that you do not use your retinol on the same night as both products are working to increase skin cell turnover and can leave the skin feeling irritated and sensitive.

Whether or not your serum should be applied morning or evening depends entirely on the

formula itself and the concentration of active ingredients, however as a general rule of thumb, it’s worth only using your vitamin A serums in the evening, due to their photosensitising properties (meaning you are left more susceptible to sun damage, even with your daily SPF50+ use). 

Many people insist that vitamin C serums should be reserved for the morning, this is a myth. Vitamin C can be applied in the morning or the evening (or, depending on the particular serum, both!) and the results won’t change. Many people do prefer to use their vitamin C in the morning as it can protect the skin from environmental stressors, while others prefer to use it in the evening as it’s acidic.

As a rule of thumb, it’s best to never cocktail your serums together and to layer them instead, as cocktailing them will lower their potency and, in turn, their efficacy. You’ll often read of ingredients that shouldn’t be applied in quick succession or layered, however the reality is that this comes down entirely to skin type and the formulas themselves. 

A lot of the “rules” surrounding what can and cannot be combined is the result of outdated research that doesn’t take a formula’s stability into account. The idea that vitamin C and A should not be used together, for example, is a misconception.

This actually depends entirely on your skin type and the formulas themselves. Some people will find this particular combination too irritating for the skin, which is why so many people choose vitamin A in the evening and C in the morning, however many people love the brightening properties of vitamin A and C when used in unison.

This in mind, ease into your new products and always undergo a patch test when trying a new combination.

“Gem, why are my hands so dry? They’re really sore,” was the first thing he said to me. Immediately behind “Hi!” and well before “How are you?” or “What have you been up to?” 

Admittedly, this isn’t the first time this has happened. What is it about hand care that has rendered it more urgent a conversation topic than greetings and niceties? 

Our hands are almost constantly exposed to the elements, more so than any other area of our body, so they tend to be the first area of our skin to show signs of dryness. 

Beyond that, it’s a timely skin qualm - our skin is infinitely more prone to dryness and irritation in the winter months than in any other season (more on that here), and as a population we’re now washing and sanitising ourselves more than ever before. 

To some it may seem commonsensical and to others it may seem unnecessary, but a nourishing hand care routine is the key to keeping the skin on your hands smooth and, more importantly, pain free, this winter. 

Why do our hands get so dry in the winter?

To understand how to give our hands the care they so need in the winter, it’s worth spending a bit of time on why it is that they can get so dry. 

In my opinion, the largest contributing factor to this all-too-common skin woe is environmental aggressors, which is why this question tends to pop up more often in the winter. 

Much like our face, our hands (unless you are a glove wearer) are constantly exposed to the elements. In the winter, those elements ebb and flow between cold winter air and dry artificial heating - neither of which are particularly good for the skin, and both of which work to pull moisture from your skin. 

The face, however, is slightly less prone to seasonal dryness and irritation than our hands. 

Why? Because, generally, we wash our face twice a day and follow that almost immediately with the application of a moisturiser. 

Our hands are washed repeatedly throughout the day and, given the couple of years we’ve had, we’re usually following that process up with application of a sanitiser. 

There are a number of drying factors at play here - firstly, hot water is more drying than cold water as the heat can damage the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it more exposed to irritation. 

Secondly, the frequency of washing is leaving the skin drier and drier. 

Thirdly, most effective sanitisers contain antibacterial agents designed to kill germs which, you guessed it, are also drying out that all-important skin barrier. 

So what about the “soreness” my friend complained of? My response to his question (behind “Yep I’m good, thanks for asking,”) was “Which hand cream are you using?” 

His answer confirmed my suspicions- he was regularly applying a hand cream rich in fragrance. Fragrance, artificial or otherwise, isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however if your hands are already chapped and irritated (which suggests that the skin barrier is highly damaged), fragrance is a really common irritant. 

This isn’t the case for everyone, however heavily perfumed products can dry out and irritate the skin further, so if you’re finding that some products “sting” a little on application, it’s well worth switching to a fragrance free alternative. 

Despite the near constant barrage of external aggressors, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep chapped skin and irritation of the hands at bay, whatever the weather. 

+ Lower the temperature (slightly) when washing your hands

Every dermatologist I have ever interviewed has told me that showering in lukewarm water is one of the best ways to avoid dry skin in the winter (although I personally refuse to act on that advice). 

The same principle applies to hand washing. I’m not suggesting washing your hands under a freezing cold stream, however I’d recommend slightly reducing the temperature and simply washing your hands for a bit longer than you otherwise would, as opposed to washing them for a short burst under piping hot water.

Unless we’re at home, we’re forced to use whatever soap the office, shopping centre, doctor’s office etc has provided. While this might be a lovely liquid soap, there’s really no way of knowing what’s in it. 

It’s safe to assume that it will be effective at killing bacteria, however you can’t tell if it contains any hydrating ingredients without being able to flip over the bottle (and, even then, how many of us are guilty of refilling an expensive soap bottle with a supermarket brand?). 

To ensure that your hands are receiving a hit of hydration with every wash, I recommend decanting your favourite liquid soap into a travel sized bottle and taking it out with you.

This is a tip that I really had to train myself to make a habit. We’ve been told to wait until our hand sanitiser dries before applying a hand lotion, so as to not dilute the sanitiser, but how many of us are following through?

We tend to look at hand creams as something we apply as a treatment, rather than a preventative, opting to apply it whenever we notice that our hands are looking or feeling a little dry.
