A turn, poorly negotiated—too fast, too late, it doesn't matter. Silence descends, thick as a hangover after a bottomless night. Then the impact, sharp, head-on, irrevocable.

1:12 a.m. Everything explodes. Leather tears, dirt joins the party, glass shatters into tiny fragments, like dreams trampled underfoot in the morning. The roar fills the car, fear seeps everywhere, into the folds of clothes, into the throat, into the hands. No why, no how, just pure, unadulterated terror, without explanation.

Then, nothing. Silence, heavy, five lives suspended, the world turned upside down, literally. I find myself trapped in the wreckage, breathless, my head spinning. A question that pounds: is it over?
