A Complete Guide to Understanding Your Skintype

One of the most common questions I get as a skin therapist is: - What is my skin type?! I feel there's too little knowledge about skin types and different skin conditions. This creates uncertainty about what type of skincare to use. As licensed Spa & Skin Therapist at Youtime, let me guide you!

To very briefly describe the term skin type, it would be how your skin behaves, the general skin condition. You can have other conditions that come and go, such as different stages of sensitivity, surface dryness, impurities, and pigmentation changes, among others. Your skin type usually depends on genetics but can also be affected by age, hormones, weather changes, climate, and skincare. Here are some simple guidelines on how to adapt your skincare to your skin type.

NORMAL SKIN TYPE

A normal skin type is usually skin in balance that feels smooth and soft. It's neither dry nor oily and has an even, fine complexion with a finer texture. A normal skin type usually doesn't require a complicated routine. Here it's good to think about maintaining the balance in the skin to prevent future skin problems. Facial Cleanser with spirulina and Yuzu from Salt & Stone is a nice option for cleansing that balances the pH balance of the skin.

Facial Cleanser - Spirulina & Yuzu

A powerful, yet gentle facial cleanser infused with seaweed extracts & antioxidant-rich botanicals to leave skin hydrated and silky smooth. Gentle enough for morning and evening use, safe for sensitive skin.

DRY SKIN TYPE

A dry skin type can feel tight, matte, and give an itchy feeling on the skin. You may experience that the skin is more prone to flaking, more prominent lines and wrinkles, sensitivity in the form of redness and irritation can also occur.

The pores on a dry skin type are usually significantly smaller. Here you need a lot of moisture and oils, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, lipids, ceramides, glycerin, or products with oil in them. The barrier-strengthening Ectoin Repair Serum and Nourishing Rich Cream from Susanne Kaufmann are a perfect match for dry skin that needs to strengthen the skin barrier and deeply moisturize.

Tips: Avoid drying products, exfoliate regularly, and moisturize regularly. A moisture mask a few times a week helps restore moisture balance more quickly in combination with your other products.

OILY SKIN TYPE

Here we have skin with higher sebum production, which often means you may feel shiny and oily on the skin. An oilier skin type can have more dilated and visible pores. It's common to have a greater tendency towards clogged pores, pimples, and blackheads.

Tips are to be careful to cleanse the face morning and evening, preferably choose a gel cleanser that helps balance increased sebum levels in the skin. A lighter oil-free lotion or gel is preferred for moisturizing. Exfoliate using BHA acid, check out Blemish + Age Toner from SkinCeuticals that helps reduce sebum production and cleanses pores more deeply.

COMBINATION SKIN TYPE

A typical combination skin can feel both dry and oily; it may be that the t-zone feels shinier and the cheeks drier. This skin type can be a bit difficult to relate to when it comes to products. Tailor your routine with products adapted for a combination skin type; here I would say ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are good to look for.

Tips, multi-mask with two different masks, a clay mask Vegan Matcha Gentle Mud Cream Mask from Hyeja in the t-zone and a moisture mask, Hydrating B5 Masque from Skinceuticals on other areas like the cheeks and forehead.

MATURE SKIN TYPE

A mature skin type may experience a loss of elasticity, firmness, and volume in the face. As collagen and elastin production decreases as we age. Fine lines, wrinkles, and an uneven skin tone with pigmentation are often common. Tips are to update your bathroom cabinet with more active products containing vitamin C, vitamin A (retinoids), and peptides.

Also look at combining both BHA and AHA acids to balance and renew skin texture, along with richer creams as mature skin can more easily feel dry and tight. A good retinol product to start introducing to the skin is Retinol 0.3, a fantastic ingredient that has many great benefits for the skin, including cell renewal and smoothing effects.
